Some supplements are fat-soluble: they dissolve into dietary fat and get absorbed along with it. Take them with black coffee on an empty stomach and a good share of the dose passes through you.
In our 66-supplement catalog, 13 entries carry this rule. Here they are, and the single habit that covers every one of them.
The 13
Four groups. The fat-soluble vitamins, the oils, the carotenoid antioxidants, and two herbs whose active compounds happen to need the same treatment.
- Vitamins: D3, K2, E, and A
- Oils: fish oil and algae omega-3
- Antioxidants: CoQ10, astaxanthin, resveratrol, and lutein with zeaxanthin
- Botanicals and lipids: saw palmetto, bacopa, and phosphatidylserine
Why fat is the vehicle
These compounds don't dissolve in water. They ride along with dietary fat through digestion, so the fat in your meal is effectively the delivery system.
No fat, no ride. It's the same reason salad dressings exist: the carotenoids in vegetables absorb far better with oil on them.
You don't need a special meal
A normal meal that contains fat is enough: eggs, yogurt, olive oil, avocado, nuts, or just dinner as you already cook it. There's no need to measure grams.
What doesn't work is the all-water routine: capsules swallowed first thing with nothing else, which is exactly how many people take their vitamin D.
One habit covers all of it
Anchor every fat-soluble supplement to your largest meal. One slot, no thinking, and pairings like vitamin D3 with K2 land together the way they should.
Plenty of supplements genuinely don't care about food, and a few work better without it. That's a different list, covered in the empty stomach article below.
