Can you take magnesium and calcium together?
Yes, but space them out
Fine together at modest doses; at high doses they compete for absorption, so separate them.
What happens when you combine them
Calcium and magnesium use overlapping absorption routes, and our catalog notes a mild interaction when doses run high. A small amount of each together is a non-issue; a 1,000 mg calcium dose landing next to your magnesium is where efficiency drops.
Calcium already has a splitting rule of its own (higher totals divide into smaller doses), which conveniently creates the spacing magnesium needs.
How to time it
Put calcium with meals, split if you're above the mid range, and magnesium glycinate in the evening. If a calcium dose lands at dinner, keep the magnesium for bedtime: a comfortable gap without any clock-watching.
Common questions
Do you need a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio?
The ratio rule is folklore more than evidence. Dose each to its own target (calcium against your dietary gap, 100 to 350 mg elemental for magnesium) and let the ratio be whatever it turns out to be.
