Fiber (Psyllium / Glucomannan)
Soluble fiber supporting gut regularity, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
What it is
Soluble fiber supplements (psyllium husk, glucomannan) form a gel in the gut that slows sugar absorption, binds cholesterol, and promotes regularity.
How it works
Gel-forming soluble fiber increases stool bulk, slows gastric emptying, and binds bile acids to reduce LDL cholesterol reabsorption.
What the evidence says
Strong evidence for regularity and LDL reduction; moderate evidence for glycemic control.
Safety Notes
- MUST take with adequate water to prevent choking/obstruction. Increase dose gradually to minimize gas/bloating.
- Use caution with: bowel obstruction, swallowing difficulty (caution), esophageal stricture.
- all oral medications: Fiber can reduce absorption of medications; take meds 1h before or 2h after fiber.
- antidiabetic medications: Additive blood sugar lowering; monitor glucose.
