Antioxidants
Astaxanthin
Potent carotenoid antioxidant from algae; supports skin and eye health.
What it is
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment from Haematococcus pluvialis algae. It's one of the most potent natural antioxidants, spanning the full cell membrane.
How it works
Spans the lipid bilayer providing antioxidant protection on both sides; quenches singlet oxygen ~6000x more effectively than vitamin C.
What the evidence says
Moderate evidence for skin UV protection and hydration; emerging evidence for exercise recovery and eye health.
Safety Notes
- Red-orange color is normal. Look for algae-derived (Haematococcus pluvialis) for purity and sustainability.
- Use caution with: shellfish allergy (if from krill source; algae-derived is fine).
- blood pressure medications: May slightly lower blood pressure; monitor.
- immunosuppressants: May modulate immune function; consult physician.
