How to combine them
The pre-workout window is 30 to 60 minutes: citrulline and Alpha-GPC go there, electrolytes go in the bottle, and taurine fits either. Beta-alanine doesn't care about timing at all; it works by saturation, like creatine.
Daily consistency beats event-day heroics for beta-alanine and astaxanthin. Take them every day, training or not.
Citrulline needs one flag: it interacts with nitrates and PDE5 inhibitors and deserves caution with low blood pressure. If that describes you, ask your doctor before adding it.
Common questions
What actually works in pre-workouts?
Of the usual ingredients, caffeine (strong evidence) and beta-alanine (moderate) carry the load, with citrulline mixed. Much of the rest of a proprietary blend is flavor and marketing. Buying the ones that work separately usually costs less.
Why does beta-alanine make you tingle?
Paresthesia is a known, harmless, dose-dependent effect. Split your daily total into doses of 2 g or less and it mostly disappears. The tingle also says nothing about whether the supplement is working.
Do endurance athletes need electrolytes or just water?
For long sessions and heat, the strong evidence favors electrolytes over water alone. Sodium loss varies enormously between athletes, so start around 500 mg and adjust to your conditions and sweat rate.
