Antioxidants
Lutein + Zeaxanthin
Carotenoids protecting retinal health and filtering blue light.
What it is
Lutein and zeaxanthin are macular carotenoids that accumulate in the retina, protecting photoreceptors from blue light and oxidative damage.
How it works
Filter high-energy blue light in the macula; quench reactive oxygen species; protect photoreceptor cells from phototoxicity.
What the evidence says
Strong evidence for macular health (AREDS2 trial); moderate evidence for blue light filtering and skin photoprotection.
Safety Notes
- AREDS2 formula dose: 10 mg lutein + 2 mg zeaxanthin. Safe for long-term use. Marigold-derived is most common source.
