NAC
Amino Acids

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

Glutathione precursor; supports liver detox and respiratory health.

What it is

NAC is a stable form of the amino acid L-cysteine. It's a direct precursor to glutathione, the body's master antioxidant.

How it works

Replenishes intracellular glutathione; supports Phase II liver detoxification and mucolytic activity in airways.

What the evidence says

Strong evidence as glutathione precursor and mucolytic; moderate evidence for liver support and antioxidant defense.

Safety Notes

  • May cause GI upset at higher doses. Consider taking with vitamin C to support glutathione recycling.
  • Use caution with: active bleeding (caution), asthma (rare bronchospasm reported).
  • nitroglycerin: May potentiate effects causing severe hypotension; avoid concurrent use.
  • anticoagulants: May have mild antiplatelet effects.
  • activated charcoal: Charcoal reduces NAC absorption; separate dosing.
