The best supplements for focus,
timed to your day.

Most lists of the best supplements for focus bury the important part: one combination carries most of the results people actually feel, and it costs almost nothing. Caffeine plus L-theanine has the strongest evidence here and decades of everyday use behind it.

The other six are situational tools. Cholines support attention, tyrosine holds you together under stress and sleep loss, and bacopa pays off only after weeks. Doses and evidence grades below come straight from our catalog.

The stack, ranked

  1. 1.

    Caffeine

    strong evidence

    50-200 mg · Morning, Pre-workout

Caffeine is the only entry with strong evidence, and you already know it works. The skill is in the dosing: 50 to 200 mg at a time, nothing within 6 to 8 hours of bed, and an occasional low-caffeine day when the effect fades.

  2. 2.

    L-Theanine

    moderate evidence

    100-400 mg · Morning, Night

L-theanine is the reason this list starts with a pair. Taken with caffeine it smooths the jitters into steady attention, the best-studied synergy in this stack. The pairing commonly runs 100 to 200 mg alongside a normal coffee.

  3. 3.

    CDP-Choline

    moderate evidence

    250-500 mg · Morning

CDP-choline (citicoline) has moderate evidence for attention and memory, with a strong safety record across trials. 250 to 500 mg in the morning is the studied range. Weighing it against Alpha-GPC? We compared them.

  4. 4.

    L-Tyrosine

    moderate evidence

    500-2000 mg · Morning

L-tyrosine earns its keep only when you're depleted: acute stress, sleep deprivation, long cognitive grinds. Under those conditions the evidence is moderate; at baseline it does little. Save it for the hard days, 500 to 2,000 mg on an empty stomach.

  5. 5.

    Bacopa Monnieri

    moderate evidence

    300-600 mg · Morning

Bacopa is the long game. Memory improvements show up after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use, not on day one. Take 300 to 600 mg with a fat-containing meal, and expect some stomach grumbling in the first weeks.

  6. 6.

    Rhodiola Rosea

    moderate evidence

    200-600 mg · Morning

Rhodiola targets fatigue-flavored focus loss, with moderate evidence for mental performance under stress. Take 200 to 600 mg in the morning on an empty stomach. It's mildly stimulating, so watch your caffeine alongside it.

  7. 7.

    Phosphatidylserine

    emerging evidence

    100-300 mg · Morning, Midday

Phosphatidylserine holds moderate evidence for cognition in older adults; for focus specifically the grade is emerging. If brain aging is your concern, 100 to 300 mg with food is reasonable. If you're young and chasing deep work, the entries above come first.

  8. 8.

    Lion's Mane Mushroom

    emerging evidence

    500-3000 mg · Morning, Midday

Lion's mane is the most talked about and the least proven here. Human trials are small, so the grade stays emerging. If you try it anyway, 500 to 3,000 mg with food, and pick dual-extracted fruiting body products.

How to combine them

The default stack is simple. Caffeine and L-theanine in the morning, citicoline alongside them, bacopa with any meal, daily. Tyrosine stays in the drawer for all-nighters and high-stress days.

Don't stack stimulation. Rhodiola adds to caffeine's edge, so cut the caffeine dose on days you take both. Skip doubled cholines too: citicoline and Alpha-GPC overlap enough that combining them tends to add headaches, not focus.

Anything stimulating stops by early afternoon. Caffeine late in the day, or tyrosine and rhodiola in the evening, trades tomorrow's focus for today's.

Common questions

What ratio of L-theanine to caffeine works best?

The common pairing is 100 to 200 mg of L-theanine alongside a normal caffeine dose of 50 to 200 mg. There's no magic ratio. Start with your usual coffee, add the theanine, and lower the caffeine if you still feel wired.

How long does bacopa take to work?

8 to 12 weeks of consistent daily dosing. That's the timeline the memory trials used, so give it a full run before judging it. Our catalog suggests 12 weeks on, then 4 weeks off.

Do focus supplements work without sleep?

Mostly no, with one exception. L-tyrosine has moderate evidence specifically under acute stress and sleep loss. Everything else works better after a real night of sleep, and caffeine only masks the debt.
