D-Mannose
Simple sugar that prevents bacterial adhesion in the urinary tract.
What it is
D-Mannose is a naturally occurring simple sugar that prevents E. coli from adhering to the urinary tract lining, supporting urinary tract health.
How it works
Binds to FimH adhesin on E. coli type 1 pili, preventing bacterial attachment to uroepithelial cells; bacteria are flushed out during urination.
What the evidence says
Moderate evidence for UTI prevention; comparable to low-dose antibiotics in some trials.
Safety Notes
- Only effective against E. coli UTIs (which account for ~85% of UTIs). Not a treatment for active UTI — seek medical care.
- Use caution with: mannose processing disorder (rare genetic condition).
- antidiabetic medications: D-mannose is a sugar; minimal blood sugar impact but monitor in diabetes.
