Zn
Minerals
Zinc (Elemental)
Essential trace mineral; high chronic dosing can cause copper deficiency.
What it is
Zinc supports immune function and wound healing. Chronic high dosing increases adverse effects and copper-depletion risk.
How it works
Cofactor for many enzymes and immune processes; excess zinc interferes with copper absorption.
What the evidence says
Best supported for essential nutrition; avoid chronic high-dose use due to copper-related risk.
Safety Notes
- UL for adults is 40 mg/day; chronic ≥50 mg/day increases copper-deficiency risk.
- Use caution with: known copper deficiency.
- tetracycline antibiotics: Chelation reduces absorption; take antibiotic ≥2h before or 4–6h after zinc.
- quinolone antibiotics: Chelation reduces absorption; take antibiotic ≥2h before or 4–6h after zinc.
- penicillamine: Separate dosing to avoid reduced drug effect.
Timing With Other Supplements
- Iron (Elemental): High-dose iron can reduce zinc absorption; separate if needed.
